Voor Jillis: LGBTQIA+ Emancipatie en Hedendaagse Kunst

The exhibition Voor Jillis was organised by the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in collaboration with local initiatives to mark the five year anniversary of the Jillis Bruggeman Penning. This prestigious national award is named after Jillis Bruggeman, who in 1803 became the last person in the Netherlands to be executed for having same sex relations. The exhibition served a dual purpose: it honoured historical struggles while celebrating contemporary LGBTQIA+ emancipation.
During the opening of this specific exhibition on March 11, 2019, the annual Jillis Bruggeman Penning was awarded to Boris Dittrich. Dittrich is a prominent human rights activist and former politician who was one of the primary driving forces behind the legalisation of same sex marriage in the Netherlands in 2001. The curatorial framework of the exhibition operated under the theme that everyone is different, using high level institutional curation to explore sexual diversity and gender identity. By integrating the work of celebrated artists, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam created a space where art functioned as both historical documentation and a platform for social justice.
The Connection: Arjan Spannenburg and the Portrait of Identity
Arjan Spannenburg was invited to participate in this group exhibition due to his profound ability to capture the psychological depth of identity formation. His monochrome portraiture frequently explores adolescents on the threshold of adulthood, navigating the complex search for self expression and individuality.
Exhibiting alongside internationally recognised figures like Erwin Olaf and Evelyne Taocheng Wang firmly positioned Spannenburg within the upper echelon of Dutch fine art photography. His participation in this museum exhibition highlights his authority in visual storytelling and demonstrates how his art aligns seamlessly with significant societal themes and institutional collections.
